There is no need to contact your current energy supplier to advise them you are going to be switching. Your new supplier will arrange the transfer for you. However, you should ensure that your new gas and electricity supplier takes a final meter reading from you (at the date of transfer), so your current electricity and gas supplier can produce a final bill. It is advisable to keep any bills and documentation you have that relate to your current energy supplier for future reference.
If you are in debt to your current supplier, or have a bill outstanding for more than 28 days, you may be unable to switch energy supplier until you have paid the balance. Any funds that you owe your supplier will not be transferred to another supplier if you decide to switch. If however you are in credit with your current supplier, you will receive a cheque to reimburse you when the switch takes place. To check the current situation with your supplier you can contact their customer services team who will give you up to date information and if necessary let you know how to settle an outstanding balanace.
If you have just moved house it is necessary to contact the current supplier to the property and register as the bill payer before you can do a price comparison and switch supplier. If you are not sure who is currently supplying gas and/or electricity to your property, you should refer to your bills which should show the name and contact details of the supplier. If you do not have any bills to hand then you can contact the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 and they will tell you the name of your current supplier.
If you are not the owner of the property the landlord or letting agency can give you the necessary information to confirm the supplier. Should you still be unsure of the correct details then your regional electricity supplier will be able to help. Their number can be obtained from directory enquiries.
