Green energy suppliers and tariffs

There are a variety of different green energy tariffs for you to choose from. You can switch to a supplier that provides renewable electricity or you can choose a scheme where the supplier provides the same amount of renewable energy to the national grid that you have used in your household. With the latter option the actual energy you use may come from a traditional energy source.

Different types of renewable energy sources

There are different ways in which suppliers can provide 'green' energy:

  1. Renewable energy generation
This is where electricity is generated using techniques such as wind or hydro. These methods have little impact on the environment and are the cleanest types of renewable energy.

  2. Offsetting
Your energy comes from traditional sources, such as coal and gas fired power stations. However, the supplier may plant trees or take other actions to offset the CO2 that your energy creates.

  3. Green fund donations
Again, your energy usually comes from traditional energy sources, but the supplier makes a donation on your behalf to an environmental organisation such as the RSPB.
